  1. Wind and rain - a perfect english summer

    09/06/08 03:46:59 | 1 Comments

The school holidays come to an end in 2 days, as the toothless wonder goes back to school on Monday. In the past 6 weeks however, we've had less than 4 days of sunshine. It's been cold, it's been windy, it's been rainy. And if not those at the same time (which it has been) it's been at least totally grey and gloomy.

I really can't understand anymore why I am still living in this country.
  2. today is TOBY day!

I have a furring bundle of purr climbing over me! He's also got catfood breath, which is pretty rank having just snacked on a sachet of kitten food.

The girls are upset because he likes me and not them so far. They both fail to realise that they move at 100 miles an hour, where I just stay put and talk gently to him. Plus I sung to him all the way home in the car.

He's in the back room and I am sitting on the sofa chair with the laptop. He was in here by himself for a...

Not that you'd know it from my radio silence, but I've become white the allotmentophile lately. As the days have lengthened, I've been slipping down at 7pm to search and kill slugs and to dig out the remaining plots.

I gave up on the carrots since none of them decided to raise their heads above the crusted ground, but when I dug over the...
  4. Confessing to an addiction

    02/26/08 03:35:24 | 3 Comments

I've struggled with addition for a long time. Well not to much struggled. I've embraced it pretty well for years. I accept that I live in a state of acceptance, and I manage the addiction quite strictly. But sometimes you get a reminder about the intensity of things in a rather sureal way, like a cosmic hand reaching down and slapping you silly. That's what I got when I found myself kissing the envelope in which the replacement valve for my cappucino machine arrived...
  5. a frosy idyll

I think that going on holiday in February in Britain is always going to carry the risk of freezing conditions. Canoeing and sailing were out of the question. But overall, a five day jaunt at Center Parcs turned out to be quite pleasant.

I don't think I'd rush back, not unless the cost was drastically reduced. But having said that, there were a lot of nice aspects to the whole experience. The indoor pool area was perfect for the girls, with two small slides, a salt water pool...
  6. Spudtastic

    02/03/08 11:04:57 | 0 Comments

I took delivery of my potato order today. I ordered Desiree, but got King Edwards. But it's not really a big issue, since I only ordered Desiree because they sounded nice. Whether they were better spuds or not is not the issue. So my King Edwards are now sitting in the hurricane shelter with a cherry tree, 2 blueberry stalks, a redcurrant stalk and a black currant stalk. All waiting to be planted.

We spent this morning moving the compost heap from our backyard to the allotment,...
  7. plotting and planning!

    12/10/07 05:29:43 | 0 Comments

Having taken over the new allotment, I have be busy plotting up my little rotation. Piles of pages of notes, and printouts of advise from different sites was starting get slighly overwhelming! It's like putting a jigsaw together that's made of magnets. Some crops want to be near certain others, and yet others hate the very sight of them. Or so it would seem from my research.

so I made it easier for myself, and made an illustrator file up so I could just slide the boxes...
  8. 4.30 wake up call

    12/09/07 02:51:08 | 0 Comments

Hearing the doorbell ring at 4.30 in the morning is a disconcerting thing. To start with, your subconscious has to wake up your conscious brain and get you moving. Then you spend a few seconds wondering what woke you, and then you barrel on down the stairs wondering how long it actually was since the button was pushed.

And then of course - it's a policeman standing at the door. It's quite unreal. He's in his shirtsleeves, and must be freezing. My first thoughts are not...
  9. New allotment

    12/03/07 04:51:00 | 0 Comments

This post is a bit late in coming, but a few weeks ago i took over our new allotment plot. It became available when the gentleman who owned it died, which is a sad way to take over something. But I am looking forward to seeing it bloom again.

right now, the plot is empty. His wife and daughters cleared the potatoes, and the corn crop had failed. There are a few tomatoes that had blight, so I don't plan on growing any on the plot at all. I found the remains of some beet plants, but...
  10. updates

    12/03/07 04:37:51 | 0 Comments

I know we've been quiet for a while - there hasn't been an official push since 6th November. But doesn't mean that behind the scenes is in any way quiet!
